Founder - Dr Nicola Sibson

Dr Nicola SibsonNicola gained her BA (Neurophysiology) in 1991 and her doctorate in 1995, both from the University of Cambridge. She then spent four years at Yale University, and in 1999 accepted a post in the MRC Biochemical and Clinical Magnetic Resonance Unit in Oxford. In 2003 Nicola established her own Experimental Neuroimaging Group and in 2007 was recruited to lead the pre-clinical MRI programme at the Gray Institute for Radiation Oncology and Biology.

Nicola’s research interests lie in understanding how the brain responds to stimulation and the consequences of disease on these processes. The emphasis of her research programme is on whole system, in-vivo, neuroscience and she has over 20 years of experience in using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy (MRS) approaches to address otherwise intractable questions in brain physiology and pathology. She has extensively studied models of human disease, including stroke, multiple sclerosis and prion disease, determining previously unrecognised aspects of these pathologies.

Concurrent with her move to the Gray Institute, Nicola was awarded a five-year programme grant from Cancer Research UK to develop multi-modal imaging in the context of brain metastasis. Primary goals include developing new methods for acute detection and diagnosis of brain metastasis. The development and use of novel targeted contrast agents is a key element of Nicola’s work.
